Project Details:
The Mainfreight logistical hub project delivered full site preparation and civil works on a greenfield site in Hastings’ Irongate Industrial Zone. Starting from a flat paddock with no existing infrastructure, SCL confronted significant stormwater challenges and stringent geotechnical requirements while maintaining strict quality control standards throughout the 12-month build.
To overcome the absence of council stormwater systems, our team designed and implemented large-scale underground soak pits with engineered filtration systems, validated through flow metre testing and real-time adjustments with remote engineers. Through detailed geotechnical analysis, project manager Mike Job identified opportunities for cut-to-fill efficiency, achieving 15,000m³ of site material reuse and only 13,000m³ of imports, delivering substantial cost and carbon savings.
Quality assurance remained paramount with comprehensive compaction testing, nuclear density verification, and proactive Benkelman Beam testing that detected and remediated potential sub-base issues before any surface failures could occur. Strategic construction sequencing saw drainage laid from the building outward, allowing building trades to proceed unhindered and minimising delays across the entire project team.
The resulting infrastructure features 20,000m² of asphalt surfacing, 2,200m of underground drainage, pumped sewer systems with integrated pump stations, and specialist wash bay facilities. Delivered three months ahead of schedule and on budget, the project demonstrated SCL’s capability to self-deliver multi-million dollar infrastructure with minimal subcontracting, earning recognition from national contractor Dominion Constructors for future regional projects.
